After competing his Financial Analysis studies at Stellenbosch University, Bevan joined UCS solutions as a junior consultant. It was at UCS that Bevan grew an interest in seeing how systems worked to make business ideas a viable reality.  He went on to work at a firm in the mobile payment industry, and slowly started to connect the dots between business, retail and mobile systems and seeing how the three could work seamlessly together.

When the time came for Bevan to go into business by himself, he jumped at the opportunity. He quit his job, armed with a financial forecast and a business plan and went to his old friend, Basie Kok whom he met at university, and asked him to build the prototypes that would be the basis of their initial company, WiWallet. Bevan quickly learnt that they were competing with other wallets and services for a piece of the consumer market and things were not going according to plans – although he had the ideas, the market was simply not ready for them yet. Bevan sat down with his team, with a new vision.  They would white label their product, change to a business to business model and become the platform that aggregates all the other apps and services entering the market.  Rather than competing with mobile wallets and apps and payment gateways, wiGroup would enable them.

This is when wiWallet became wiGroup, the single aggregator of all mobile transactions across stores, platforms and channels in South Africa.'

WiGroup is a pioneering software business that provides a technology platform that performs as an aggregator and as an interoperable layer between retailers and mobile payment offering, such as: Mobile in-store payments, mobile money transfer, mobile coupons / vouchers, and mobile loyalty. Through wiGroup, money is now mobile.  The world can now make payments more swiftly, securely, and conveniently than ever before. Clients include Pick ‘n Pay, Shoprite, MXit, Nandos, Vide e caffe and Kauai.

Openness will define the future of mobile transactions

If your smartphone is near you while you’re reading this – and I’ll be surprised if it isn’t – pick it up and take a moment to consider all the things it is to you. It’s a calendar, little black book of contacts, games console, music centre, camera, miniature TV, communications portal, news delivery system, encyclopaedia, navigation system, memo pad… and of course, you can also make calls on it.

All this – and yet there’s still room to cram more functions in there. The one you can expect to hear a lot more of in the next couple of years is simple – it’s also going to become your wallet.
